BSeen & Heard: Understanding Clinical Trials

Clinical trials are carefully designed research studies that test new medical treatments, procedures, or devices on people. They aim to answer specific health questions, such as whether a treatment works, how safe it is, and what its side effects might be.

Phases of Clinical Trials

  1. Phase 1: Focuses on safety. Researchers test a small group of participants to evaluate side effects and dosage.
  2. Phase 2: Explores effectiveness. A larger group is involved to see how well the treatment works.
  3. Phase 3: Confirms effectiveness, monitors side effects, and compares it to other treatments. Thousands of participants may take part.
  4. Phase 4: Conducted after FDA approval to monitor long-term effects.

Who Should Participate?

Clinical trials often look for:

  • Healthy volunteers.
  • People with specific conditions the trial aims to treat. Participation can help advance medical science and potentially provide early access to new treatments.

Questions to Ask Before Participating

  1. What is the purpose of the study?
  2. What are the potential risks and benefits?
  3. How long will it last?
  4. Will I have to pay for treatment?
  5. What happens if I decide to leave?

Your Rights Matter

  • Participation is entirely voluntary.
  • You can withdraw at any time, for any reason.
  • Consent is required before joining. Make sure you understand all details before agreeing.

Our Areas of Concerns

At BSeen & Heard, we are committed to tackling the healthcare challenges faced by underserved communities. Many individuals lack access to essential medical care, leading to an increased burden of chronic diseases and life-threatening conditions. Clinical trials play a vital role in bringing new treatments and medical advancements to those who need them most.

Health Concerns in Underserved Communities

  • Cardiovascular Disease47% of Black adults have been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, compared to 36% of White adults. Limited access to preventive care increases the risk of heart disease, strokes, and related complications. Clinical trials provide opportunities for early intervention and groundbreaking treatment options.
  • Diabetes – Hispanic women are twice as likely as White women to have diabetes, which is a major risk factor for heart disease. Many people struggle with diabetes management due to economic and geographical barriers. Participation in trials can lead to better medication and lifestyle interventions tailored to their needs.
  • High Cholesterol19.7% of Black adults have high cholesterol compared to 25.8% of White adults. Lack of proper screenings and diet education contribute to widespread cholesterol-related conditions. Research studies help develop innovative therapies for better heart health.
  • Hypertension59% of Black adults have hypertension, the highest prevalence among all racial and ethnic groups. High blood pressure remains a silent threat for many. Clinical trials aim to discover more effective treatment strategies that could be accessible to underserved populations.
  • Cancer – Minority communities often experience higher cancer mortality rates due to late diagnoses and insufficient treatment options. Research studies introduce novel therapies, screenings, and personalized medicine approaches.
  • Rare Diseases – Many individuals with rare conditions go undiagnosed or receive limited treatment. Clinical trials drive scientific discoveries that can lead to life-changing treatments.
